GREENDALE- A high school senior faces criminal charges for a bomb threat penned on homecoming week.
17-year-old Nicholas Olson is accused of writing '3 DAYS TILL BOOM JK OR AM I?' on a boys' bathroom wall. The threat was found on a boy's bathroom wall on homecoming week.
Greendale school administrators agreed that Olson should be charged with a misdemeanor rather than a felony due to "extenuating circumstances," according to the criminal complaint.
Police say classmates "teased and taunted" Olson for years.
Students voted Olson to the homecoming court as a joke. He was the victim of a similar prom court prank last school year.
"It's just ridiculous," said high school junior Amber Lindberg. "Some kids are afraid to come to school because of what people say to them in the hallways."
Olson told police he was upset and angry, but had no plans to actually use an explosive.
The misdemeanor charge carries a fine and maximum 90-day jail term.
Other local school districts also endured recent bomb threats. There were two at New Berlin Eisenhower in the same week. Milwaukee police responded to a threat at Bay View High School last Friday.
Franklin Public Schools superintendent Steve Patz says these types of threats cripple the entire campus.
"The kids in Franklin in particular were very upset when we had one," Patz told TODAY'S TMJ4 reporter Tom Murray. "Checking lockers and hallways, our activities with our rec department are also greatly affected, let alone any student organizations that have meetings. It disrupts our transportation system."
Greendale school administrators declined to comment on the charge against their student.
