Sheboygan Walmart shooter sentenced to 18 years in prison

SHEBOYGAN- A Sheboygan man has been sentenced for murder after opening fire on a group of people in a Walmart parking lot.

The victim's family was emotional as they talked about Pheng Lee's plans for the future, and how it was taken away.  They begged the judge to give 21-year-old Kou Yang a life sentence, but the judge decided that Yang will spend the next 18 years of his life behind bars.

Through an interpreter, Pheng Lee's father and mother fought back tears as they talked about their child.

"It's not easy, someone killed him for nothing," said Lee's mother.

Yang was convicted in July for Lee's murder, and the shooting of another man.  That shooting happened in a very public place -- the Walmart in Sheboygan back in January.

Yang did apologize, he spoke directly to Lee's parents.

"It was never any intention for this to occur," explained Yang.

Yang tried to argue self-defense at trial, that a man who was with Lee the night of the shooting attacked him with a dog leash.  But Yang admitted it was his actions that have shaken the whole community.

"I will carry this scar the rest of my life."

Yang's criminal record dates back to 2005.  He was already in jail for a probation violation, and will now begin to serve his sentence for Lee's death.
