MPD officer, alleged wrong-way drunk driver in critical condition Thursday after crash

CREATED Sep. 5, 2012 - UPDATED: Sep. 6, 2012

MILWAUKEE- A Milwaukee Police officer was listed in critical condition Thursday morning after being hit by a wrong-way driver.

Both Officer Joshua Albert and the driver who struck him, Erin Salmon, were at Froedtert Hospital.  Salmon is also in critical condition.

It's a series of events that are hard to believe, but it happens more often than you might think.

Shawn Green was startled by what he saw and heard just after midnight Wednesday.  "I just saw a lot of emergency vehicles, I heard a big accident." said Green to TODAY'S TMJ4.

"I heard a loud crash, and shortly thereafter, I saw an ambulance and police vehicles on the freeway," explained Ivy Zamora, who lives near the crash site.

Police say Salmon, 23, was driving the wrong way on I-94 when she hit officer Joshua Albert head-on on his way home from work.

She reportedly did not have her headlights on when the crash happened.

Both Albert and Salmon were trapped in their respective cars when emergency crews arrived.

Albert was on his way home from work when Salmon's car crashed into his.

There have been 20 wrong-way driving incidents in Milwaukee County just this year.

William Houston Cooper and his wife Mamie have lived in their home near the crash site for almost 50 years.  Cooper told TODAY'S TMJ4 he's seen enough accidents to know he's had enough of the roads.

Salmon is looking at some serious charges for this incident.  Other than a fine for not wearing her seat belt back in 2010, it appears she doesn't have a record in Wisconsin.
