TOWN OF JACKSON- 24 private wells are now contamined with the chemical benzene in the Town of Jackson following a gasoline spill in July.

The West Shore Pipe Line company said Monday that 15 of those private wells have levels of benzene at or above the federal safe drinking water standard.

An estimated 55,000 gallons of gasoline leaked from a pipeline owned by the West Shore Pipe Line company on July 17 -- forcing the DNR to issue drinking water and flush-only advisories for parts of the Washington County town affected by the spill.

The West Shore Pipe Line company said they have tested 296 private wells since the July spill.  They plan on testing more private wells; install and test the interim groundwater remediation system.

If any resident of the Town of Jackson smells gasoline in their well water, they should call West Shore at (708) 426-4170.
