Sikh temple president remembered as hero

OAK CREEK- One of the people killed in Sunday's massacre was the Sikh temple's president Satwant Singh Kaleka.

Witnesses told TODAY'S TMJ4 that he tried to stop the gunman and was shot in the process.

Family members are trying to understand just how a horrific shooting inside a sanctuary could happen.

Amardeep Kaleka's father was killed trying to stop the shooter.

"He slowed the shooter down enough so other people could get to safety. It's an amazing act of heroism, but it's also exactly who he was. There's no way in God's green earth that he would allow someone to do that without trying his best to stop him," said Kaleka to TODAY'S TMJ4.

Kaleka was told his father used a knife to slow down the killer so others had time to get out of harm's way.

At a gathering for Sikh community members, Kaleka broke down.

"A hero, through and through.  We hope you understand that there are no words for his action."

One of the priests who was gunned down, Bhai Parkash Singh, lived here for 9 years, but his family from India had just moved to Wisconsin.

"He was very happy.  He said 'thank you God because my family is here, my kids are here,'" said Inderjeet Singh Dhillon, a temple secretary.

Dhillon said that priest enjoyed taking care of others, and will be missed.

"He was a very religious guy.  He was an honest person," said Dhillon.
