MADISON- UW-Madison officials say that senior running back and Heisman Trophy hopeful Montee Ball suffered a concussion and facial injuries following an unprovoked attack early Wednesday morning.
The Journal Sentinel reports that UW officials didn't indicate whether he would practice Monday as players report for preseason camp on Sunday.
According to Madison Police, the attack happened on the 500 block of University Avenue in Madison at about 2:15 a.m. -- leaving Ball with head injuries.
Police say five men jumped Ball, knocked him to the ground and kicked him.
"At this time, we have no indication that robbery was involved," spokesman Joel Despain told WTMJ partner station WIBA Radio in Madison.
After what authorities described as an unprovoked assault, they were last seen running south on North Frances Street in the direction of the Kohl Center.
The corner of Frances and University is less than a block from the attack scene.
"We've had a good number of crimes in this area, from shots being fired...to batteries," said Despain.
"I appreciate the support and thank you for the concerns.I will be okay! See you guys in September!" Ball tweeted Wednesday.
"My concern right now is for Montee's health and well-being," said head coach Bret Bielema in a statement.
"Montee has been released from the hospital and is under the care and supervision of our sports medicine staff. We will continue to evaluate him as we approach the start of fall camp this weekend. I do expect Montee to make a full recovery."
Authorities say it does not appear that Ball knows his attackers.
Police describe the attackers as black men.
One wore a blue polo shirt, one wore a purple polo shirt, another wore a white shirt and another wore a red shirt.
According to police, the attackers were described as being 5' 8" to 6' 3" with various builds.
Ball was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011. He tied the NCAA single season record for most touchdowns scored.
His 2011 teammate, former quarterback Russell Wilson, tweeted "I am praying for my buddy and former teammate...praying for a healthy and quick recovery."
