MILWAUKEE- Sentencing came down Friday for the get-away driver involved in the murder of a pregnant woman.
All three teens charged in Sharon Staples murder pled guilty but a judge sentenced the oldest of the trio, Jimmy Scales to 35 years in prison for his part in the murder.
With shackles on Jimmy Scales walked into a Milwaukee courtroom. The 18-year-old was there to find out just how long he will spend in prison.
Back in August 2011, Scales admitted to driving a stolen van when two of his friends -- Malik Merchant and Mikal Thomas robbed, shot and killed Sharon Staples. The pregnant mother was gun downed in front her 13-year-old son -- leaving behind 7 children.
At the time, Scales was out on probation for a reckless homicide conviction. The judge called his actions ruthless pointing out he has two murders on his record and he's only 18.
"Yes, Mr. Scales is a menace to society, he's a menace to Milwaukee and he's a danger to everyone in this community," said the judge.
Scales offered an apology to the Staples family. "I'm sorry for causing you heartache and pain. And if I could take it back I would but I can't so I take full responsibility for my actions and admit I was wrong," said Scales.
The defense recommended scales get 12 to 15 years instead of the maximum 55 year sentence
At that point, Scales looked back at his mother who broke down in tears. But the vicitm's family says it's not enough.
Scales must serve at least 25 of the 35 year sentence. The 18-year-old will be 43 at that time.
