Man charged with minivan crash that killed 6-year-old
MILWAUKEE - A Milwaukee man was charged Thursday with crashing his minivan into and killing a six-year-old boy near N. 51st St. and W. Lisbon Ave. on April 17.
Dedrick Ashford, 23, faces a felony count of knowingly operating a motor vehicle without a valid license, causing death.
Christopher Wade suffered severe bilateral head trauma and died at Children's Hospital two days after the crash.
According to a criminal complaint, Ashford "observed one little boy run from the east side of [51st St.] to the west side to the playground and that he contintued driving down 51st St. when he observed the second boy dart into the street and that he hit this boy who landed on top of the hood of his vehicle."
He stopped to check on the boy and cooperated with investigators at the scene.
"[Ashford] further stated that he does not have a valid driver's license and he has never had a valid driver's license," the complaint alleged. "He learned how to drive from his father when he was younger."
Ashford also allegedly admitting to smoking marijuana several hours before the crash.
If convicted on the felony charge against him, he faces a maximum sentence of six years in prison and $10,000 in fines.
