MILWAUKEE- A child is in grave condition after being struck by a green minivan Tuesday afternoon on the city's north side.
Milwaukee Police had released a statement at 5:43 p.m. saying the six-year-old child died around 10 p.m. Tuesday. That statement was updated at 7:53 p.m. saying the child is not dead, but in grave condition.
Police say the boy darted out into traffic near N. 51st and W. Meinecke Ave about 5:20 p.m. Tuesday when he was hit by a 22-year-old man driving that minivan, allegedly without a license.
TODAY'S TMJ4 reports the driver claimed he never saw the child coming.
According to one witness, "I was sitting in the house, talking to my friend and I just heard a big boom sound." One woman, who didn't want to be identified, told TODAY'S TMJ4 she thought she heard a fight, but she walked outside and saw two things -- a boy and blood. "I didn't really go close up to him. I couldn't really see how he looked, I just know he was in the fetal position," said the witness.
Tanyah Butts said the accident involved her friend Christopher, whom she'd just seen moments before it happened. "When I came back outside to go to the park so I could play with him, he was in the middle of the street, and I'm like, oh my god, it just happened so fast," said Butts.
