Cardinals 11, Brewers 5

By Jay Sorgi, Matt Montgomery & Associated Press. CREATED Apr 6, 2012 - UPDATED: Apr 6, 2012

Opening Day Friday: Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals

6:05 p.m. Final: Cardinals 11, Brewers 5.
David Freese hit a two-run drive for one of four St. Louis homers off Yovani Gallardo, and the Cardinals spoiled the Milwaukee Brewers' opener with an 11-5 victory on Friday.

Yadier Molina, Carlos Beltran and Matt Holliday also connected for the Cardinals, who are in Milwaukee for a three-game series after opening with a victory over the Marlins in Miami on Wednesday.

Gallardo (0-1) lasted only 3 2-3 innings, giving up seven hits and six runs with five walks and three strikeouts. Manager Ron Roenicke gave Gallardo the opening-day start ahead of Zack Greinke, despite Gallardo's career 1-7 record against the Cardinals with a 5.66 ERA coming into Friday's game.

5:12 p.m.
Several Brewers fans tailgated and watched the game from the parking lot of Miller Park.  Under Related Videos, you can see Jermont Terry's report on those fans.

Attanasio: Brewers better on Opening Day 2012 than Opening Day 2011.  Do you agree?

If you're not yet at Miller Park, you'd better park at State Fair Park and take the shuttle to the stadium.

Miller Park will open in minutes.

These fans were incredibly prepared for one of the key aspects of a Miller Park tailgate: the part involving where all the beer ends up after you drink it.  Click here to see what we mean.

12:32 p.m.
Newsradio 620 WTMJ Voice of the Brewers Joe Block joined Vince Vitrano and Susan Kim on "Live at Noon."  Here's what he had to say about his first-ever Brewers regular season broadcast.

12:03 p.m.
As Vince Vitrano and Susan Kim report at the start of "Live at Noon," starter Yovani Gallardo hits in batting practice.  Fans can begin seeing that batting practice in about an hour and change.

11:46 a.m.
Jon Byman of Newsradio 620 WTMJ reports that eastbound I-94 is "really not that bad."  That could change, however, at any moment with the closure of the right lane and just two lanes of traffic.

11:44 a.m.
Newsradio 620 WTMJ's John Mercure counted 34 different brands of beer being enjoyed in his area of the Miller Park parking lot.

11:25 a.m.
How will fans greet Ryan Braun today?  Interesting question posed by Charlie Sykes on his show on Newsradio 620 WTMJ.

What do you think?

TODAY'S TMJ4's Susan Kim revealed that grounds crews are still getting the last finishing touches done - even three and a half hours before game time.

11:12 a.m.
We have lots of videos and photos of tailgaters at Miller Park.

One of the best we found was a rather big beer bottle.  A REALLY big beer bottle.  (We're assuming there's not actually beer in there.)

10:28 a.m.
Lots are open at Miller Park for the opener.  Tailgate away!

10:23 a.m.
The parking lots may be opening soon at Miller Park.  Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman tells us that the lines to get in are nearly stretching to Miller Park Way.

10:11 a.m.
We have an update from West Milwaukee Police on the possibility that they may stop left turns from eastbound National Avenue to Miller Park Way.

9:53 a.m.
Apparently, someone has brought the cup of Ryan Braun's urine sample to Miller Park for Opening Day.

Well, maybe not.  But it's still a funny photo from Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman.

9:08 a.m.
According to Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jon Byman, some people were in line at 8:00 a.m., four hours before the lots were to open.

Natalie O'Connor, friends and family started their tailgate early while in line for a spot in the East lot.

"We have a bloody Mary bar.  We have croissants, muffins, egg bake...we have mimosa's, coffee," O'Connor told Byman.

They also had an entire sound system up for their tailgate-before-the-tailgate.

8:57 a.m.
The grounds crew is doing final touchups on the field at Miller Park.  Check out the photos of them on our photo gallery.

8:24 a.m.
The new grounds crew chief at Miller Park has the field in tip-top shape, thanks to a warm winter and great work by his crew.

Here's what else he told TODAY'S TMJ4's Susan Kim and Vince Vitrano, including the level of control he has over the Miller Park roof.

We also have more photos added to our Opening Day photo gallery.  For some reason, Susan Kim has an affinity for the Racing Sausages.

7:22 a.m.
Brewers spokesman Mike Vassalo tells us (via this photo) that the opening day lineup will be:
2B Rickie Weeks
CF Carlos Gomez
LF Ryan Braun
3B Aramis Ramirez
RF Corey Hart
SS Alex Gonzalez
1B Mat Gamel
C Jonathan Lucroy
P Yovani Gallardo

7:00 a.m.
It's official.  The roof will be closed for today's game.  (As the Brewers just told Susan Kim.)

Here's a photo gallery from our TODAY'S TMJ4 and Newsradio 620 WTMJ news and sports teams with all the events from Opening Day.  We'll be adding a bunch throughout the day.

6:46 a.m.
Beautiful description of what's going on this Opening Day morning from Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Dan O'Donnell:

"Cleaning crews are making their last-minute rounds to make sure everything is pristine. On the field, tarp is on the pitching mound and home plate while Bernie Brewer and the racing sausages are mingling with the assorted media crews that have gathered to cover one of Milwaukee’s biggest parties."

That, plus caffienated TV and radio journalists hanging out with the Racing Sausages.

6:25 a.m.
We have the official declaration from the Brewers' chief operating officer that things are set for the season opener.

"The players are ready.  The fans are ready," said an obviously excited Rick Schlesinger on TODAY'S TMJ4's "Live at Daybreak."

The stadium is, too, with a lot of new improvements.

5:30 a.m.
Don't want to give you too many bad reminders of what happened last postseason, but  yeah, the Cardinals did beat Milwaukee in six games en route to the World Series title.

4:57 a.m.
Spring has begun in Milwaukee, because baseball is beginning again.

A sellout crowd is expected to descend on Miller Park today as the NL Central Division Champion Milwaukee Brewers take on the defending World Champion St. Louis Cardinals.

Fans will have lots of things to think about today as they head into Miller Park.

1) The traffic headaches.

Fans coming in from the west will handle a lane of I-94 eastbound being closed at 70th Street.

But there are lots of ways to get into the ballpark.  Click here to see them.

2) It's Good Friday.  Are you multitasking?

Fans who believe in Christian teachings may have a lot on their plate today, as they could go to both Miller Park for the game and a Good Friday service.

Click here for times of services that will allow you to still go to, watch or listen to the game.

How will Catholic handle the teachings of the church to fast and abstain from meat?

We have meatless Miller Park options listed here.

3) What's the weather going to be?

How about sunny and seasonal temperatures?
