Doctor: Co-sleeping not the problem in Milwaukee

Doctor: Co-sleeping not the problem in Milwaukee

By Erik Bilstad. CREATED Feb 8, 2012

MILWAUKEE - You could call it an epidemic.

At least a dozen infants have died as a result of co-sleeping in the city of Milwaukee since the beginning of 2011.

But co-sleeping isn't the problem, according to one doctor.

"It's not that co-sleeping is unsafe, it's the way that it's being done," Dr. Bill Sears told me.  Dr. Sears is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

"The majority of the world's population co-sleeps with their babies," Sears explained.  "Millions of babies go to bed next to their moms and they wake up just fine."

Sears believes many of the cases in Milwaukee appear to be isolated incidents.

"The way to handle this is not to discourage bed-sharing but to teach mothers to do it safely," Sears said.  "It isn't scientifically correct to discourage bed-sharing."

"The risk of SIDS is less with co-sleeping."
