Badgers voice Lepay calls working with Irwin 'true privilege'

MADISON - The current radio voice of the Wisconsin Badgers on Newsradio 620 WTMJ remembers one of his predecessors as a man with whom working was a "true privilege."
"Jim was the consummate professional. There is a reason he is a Hall of Famer," said Matt Lepay, who calls Wisconsin football and basketball games.
"Like so many sports fans in this state and beyond, I am saddened at the news of his passing."
Irwin, the longtime voice of the Badgers, Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks, passed away Sunday after losing a battle with kidney cancer. He was 77.
Lepay was Irwin's pregame, halftime and postgame host during the 1989 and 1990 Badgers football seasons - Irwin's last in a 22-year career as voice of the Badgers.
"Someone like Jim could have "big timed" me, but he always offered words of encouragement. In a sense, perhaps he was taking me under his wing," Lepay wrote in his blog on the Wisconsin Badgers web site.
