Oshkosh police ID body from Fox River, won't release victim's name

OSHKOSH - The Oshkosh Police department issued a press release saying they have made positive identification on the body of a male recovered from the Fox River Monday.

"The name of the person is not being released pending notification and wishes of the family and foul play is not suspected, but the matter remains under investigation," according to that press release.

That release goes on to say, "The Oshkosh Police Department will be releasing further information on January 10, 2012 after the notification of family members is made."

Sources around Lambeau Field report that Packers' offensive coordinator Joe Philbin's son, Michael, has been identified by authorities in Oshkosh.

The Winnebago County's sheriff has confirmed to TODAY'S TMJ4 they have recovered a white body from the Fox River around 3 p.m. Monday.

The Oshkosh Police Department says that the son of the Green Bay Packers' offensive coordinator has gone missing and someone last heard from Michael Philbin, 21, at around 2:00 a.m. Sunday morning.

Police said he was visiting friends in Oshkosh at the time.

Meanwhile, officials in Winnebago County said they were resuming a search for someone who may have fallen through the ice in the Fox River in Oshkosh.

According to the Oshkosh Northwestern, someone with the Axletech company called at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday morning, saying he thought someone was calling for help from the river.

Packers General Manager Ted Thompson issued a statement about the situation:

“The Packers organization is aware of the missing person report regarding Michael Philbin, son of offensive coordinator Joe Philbin. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Philbin family during this difficult time. We ask anyone with information about Michael to contact the Oshkosh Police Department.”
