DOT to close Marquette Interchange freeway lane, install new chevrons

CREATED Jul. 12, 2011

MILWAUKEE - The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be closing one of the freeway lanes of the Marquette Interchange to install technology that could help make a ramp safer.

Crews will close the right lane of eastbound I-94 between 13th Street and the ramp to northbound I-43 every day between Tuesday and Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

They will put in what are called dynamic chevrons, brightly-colored directional signs.  These also use radar detection.

These are designed to use programmable blinking LED lights to help warn drivers.

The DOT says the chevrons help cut down on crashes, injuries and deaths.

According to the DOT, the ramp had 81 crashes between December 2008 and December 2010.

Of those crashes, no one died, while 26 people were injured.

59 of the 81 crashes happened when weather caused wet driving conditions on the ramp.
