MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The outgoing University of Wisconsin-Madison chancellor says she envisioned staying in the position longer, but acknowledges that political turmoil would have made it difficult to continue.

Carolyn "Biddy" Martin is stepping down to serve as president of a Massachusetts liberal-arts college. She says the time is right for her to leave Wisconsin.

Martin's departure comes after her failed proposal to split the Madison campus from the rest of the UW System.

She tells WISC-TV (http://bit.ly/oNgNE4 ) she doesn't regret not fully informing the UW System president and board of regents of the details of her plan. She says it was the only way to proceed in order to produce significant change.

But she also acknowledges that the strategy made her job of leading the university a more challenging.
