MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Teachers who have come to the state Capitol are protesting against Gov. Scott Walker's state budget as well as his proposal taking away nearly all of their collective bargaining rights.
Teachers, labor union members and others are gathering Tuesday at the Capitol as the Legislature prepares to begin debating the state budget.
The budget may be amended to include Walker's proposal taking away public workers' collective bargaining rights since the first version remains tied up in the courts.
Mauston high school teacher Leah Luke says she came to show opposition to education cuts in Walker's budget and to voice support for recall elections targeting six Republican state senators.
Police say they are not releasing crowd estimates. Several hundred protesters were around the Capitol over the noon hour.
