MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- An early morning bag of burnt popcorn triggered a fire alarm and forced hundreds of state workers in Madison out into the cold.
The GEF 1 building located just a block from the Capitol evacuated around 9:30 a.m. on Monday. Many of the employees fled to the warm confines of the Capitol to escape the 40 below wind chills.
Department of Administration spokeswoman Stephanie Marquis says someone burned popcorn in the third floor kitchenette, which set of the smoke alarm and triggers the building to be evacuated.
The four-story building houses the state Department of Workforce Development and Department of Children and Families.
