  • SOUTH MILWAUKEE - Police say that a man from Caledonia died after a fiery crash into a home following a getaway from police in South Milwaukee.

  • John Janick, 40, passed away after the crash. Court records show he had at least three convictions for operating influence in the past. The crash happened early Thursday morning near the corner of 7th and Edgewood.

  • South Milwaukee Police Administrative Captain Jill Kallay told Newsradio 620 WTMJ's Jay Sorgi that an officer saw a vehicle go past him at a speed about 25 miles per hour beyond the posted limit.

  • "The vehicle failed to stop for both audible and visual signals and subsequently crashed," said Kallay. "The fleeing vehicle had accelerated to a point that the officer could no longer see the vehicle. The officer was not actively pursuing the vehicle at the time of the crash."

  • Kallay explained that the vehicle went about 11 blocks before it collided with a tree, and eventually into a home. Both the car and home caught fire.

  • Firefighters put out the fire. No one inside the home was hurt. It took crews several hours to pull the driver's body out of the vehicle.

  • The driver was the only person inside that vehicle. Police were still attempting to identify the driver. The Wisconsin State Patrol was also taking part in the investigation.
