"Wow. We just took the lead on one of the best teams in the state."
Those words by Mequon Homestead quarterback Nick Allen describe the feeling he and his teammates had about the moment he rushed the defending WIAA Division 2 champion Highlanders to a game-winning score over defending Division 1 champ Hartland Arrowhead on Friday.
The 13-7 final came mainly on the shoulders of a defense that held Arrowhead to 82 yards in the second half.
"Our defense was so special," Allen told TODAY'S TMJ4.
"It was really amazing to watch. I talked to a friend of mine who said, 'How can you hold them down?' I said, 'Our defensive staff had a great game ready in place."
Homestead has a series of goals in mind for 2013, including winning the North Shore Conference before a focus on defending the state title.
"We want to win state, but want to keep the tradition of winning conference. I want to do that before winning state," said Allen.
The next goal for Allen and his teammates: Port Washington on Friday.
"(They're) undefeated, and we know they are a solid football team. We watched them on film. We understand what they do and we need to play well, or else we are going to be in trouble."
