It's hardly a national emergency, but a shortage of Velveeta has The Los Angeles Times posing this question: "No queso for the Super Bowl?"
"Kraft Foods, the makers of the easily meltable cheese blocks, is having trouble keeping up with the Velveeta demand," the Times reports. "Given the incredible popularity of Velveeta this time of year, it is possible consumers may not be able to find their favorite product on store shelves over the next couple of weeks," Kraft spokeswoman Jody Moore told Advertising Age
, which cited reports of a shortage at a few East Coast grocery stores. She added, "Our retail customers are aware of the situation and we expect it to be a short-term issue."
Velveeta is a key ingredient in queso dip, which is popular at NFL viewing parties.
"Any issues with availability are much more noticeable given the seasonal demand," Kraft said in a statement.
"But don't panic," the Times writes, reassuringly. "Considering the long shelf life of a block of Velveeta, you could start stocking up now, well before the game on Feb. 2."
