Marine's pregnant missing wife found dead after June disappearance; former neighbor arrested

The body of a Marine's pregnant wife who disappeared on June 28 has been found in an abandoned mine shaft in California. Her former neighbor and alleged lover has been arrested.

Erin Corwin, 19, was three months pregnant at the time that she went missing in San Bernardino County. Corwin had told her husband that she was going to scout trails at California's Joshua Tree National Park.

However, officials believe that she never made it there. Her car was found abandoned near where she used to live next to Christopher Lee and his wife, Nicole.

Several people close to Corwin told police about her affair with Lee.

"Detectives found footprints next to Corwin's abandoned car that led to tire tracks," reports CNN. "Investigators said those tire tracks were the same width and same width apart as the tires on Lee's Jeep."

Corwin's body was found in an abandoned mine shaft about 140 feet underground, after more than 100 mine shafts were searched over 300 square miles. The remote area is reportedly only accessible by four-wheel drive vehicles.

"Searchers located Corwin by using a camera, the sheriff's department said," CNN details. "Because the body was so far from the surface and the air in the mine was poor, it took another day to get to the body and bring it to the surface."

An autopsy revealed that Corwin had in fact been killed. No further details on the murder have been released.

Lee was arrested in Anchorage, Alaska, on Sunday night with charges pending. He was previously arrested on July 7 on a felony charge of being in possession of a destructive device. Lee posted bail two days later.

Lee claims that he was hunting when Corwin went missing.

Cpl. Jonathan Corwin, Erin's husband, has not publicly addressed the case.
