One shot, seven arrested during 'state of emergency' curfew in Ferguson
Protests were reportedly calming on Thursday in Ferguson, Missouri, the city where an unarmed black teenager was shot dead by police August 9. However, after the officer's name was released to the public, tensions flared again on Friday, resulting in a state of emergency imposed by Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon with a curfew in place from midnight to 5 a.m. on Saturday.
One male was shot and seven people were arrested during the late-night hours after the curfew went into effect. The shooting victim is currently in critical condition. There were also reports of sporadic looting.
"I can tell you that I was disappointed in the actions of tonight," Capt. Ron Johnson, State Highway Patrol, told CNN. Capt. Johnson is in charge of security for Ferguson. The crowd defying the curfew was described as a "noticeably younger group than what has been the norm."
Police fired smoke canisters during the first hour of the curfew, but then sent tear gas into the crowd after initial reports of the shooting. The police allegedly fired tear gas to clear a path to the injured male. "[Johnson] said authorities clamped down on protesters in response to the shooting, as opposed to the curfew violations," CNN details. Johnson also shared that police did not originally intend on using tear gas during the curfew, until the shooting occurred.
According to CNN, "I'm committed to making sure the forces of peace and justice prevail," Nixon said during a recent community meeting in a local church. "If we're going to achieve justice, we first must have and maintain peace."
Resident Carrisa McGraw tells CNN, that protests won't stop until answers are given. "It's an intimidation thing. And you're basically suppressing people who still have questions that need answers," she says of the curfew and police activity "You have people who -- at this point -- do not care what authorities say right now."
Police reportedly have no confirmed information on the shooter at this time. A police car was also shot at from a curfew-breaking individual with a handgun in the crowd.
