Cookeville Rep: 'Disturbing Pattern of Fraud' At UCDD

CREATED Oct 15, 2012

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Following the latest report on the Upper Cumberland Development District issued by Tennessee Comptroller Justin P. Wilson, Rep. Ryan Williams (R-Cookeville) issued the following statement:

"Without question, there is a disturbing pattern of fraud, waste, and abuse that has been revealed here. The Comptroller's office has undertaken a thorough and detailed investigation so all of us in Putnam County, and the entire Upper Cumberland region, have a clear understanding of the extent of what has taken place.

"All of us, as citizens and taxpayers, have a right to be outraged that this activity was taking place here in our community. It is time to put an end to this.

"With today's report highlighting the need for reform, I will begin a dialogue with the Governor's office, members of the General Assembly, and the citizens of Putnam County as to how best to address these problems.

"I believe a good starting point would be my resolution from the last General Assembly. That measure was supported by nearly all of my colleagues and I think all of us agree there needs to be more accountability put into the system.

"In our roles as legislators, we're charged with oversight of taxpayer dollars. That is what I think the objective should be here: working with the Comptroller and my colleagues to emphasize greater oversight over entities that have access to public dollars.

"We talk a lot of smaller government but, in this instance, we need to ensure good government becomes the standard. "

Rep. Williams authored House Resolution 232 in the 107th General Assembly.  The resolution passed 91-1.
