State Cracks Down on Contractor

Today the state of Tennessee cracked down on a contractor who was recently the focus of a NewsChannel 5 investigation.

Back in May, consumer investigator Jennifer Kraus first exposed how Gary Carlton has been working as a contractor for years, even though he doesn't have a state license. We also found he's been sued by homeowners around Middle Tennessee.

Customers told us they had paid Carlton thousands of dollars for remodeling projects -- and then he disappeared and didn't do the work.

Wednesday, the state Contractors Board found Carlton guilty of continuing to work without a license. The board ordered to him to pay $25,000 in fines.
