Storms Rip Roof Off Jackson County High Gym
JACKSON COUNTY, Tenn. – The strong storms that moved through the mid-state blew the roof off of a high school gym in Jackson County, prompting the school system to close all schools for Friday.
Winds ripped off the brand new roof of Jackson County High's gym on Blue Devil Lane in Gainesboro. Debris was strewn across the parking lot.
"I got a phone call around 10ish from 911 saying something
major had happened here at the high school," said Director of Jackson County Schools Joe Barlow.
The interior of the gym also suffered water damage.
No injuries were reported.
Barlow made the call to cancel classes. His time Friday morning was spent planning a come back for the gym that's been around since 1970.
"Today we'll move forward in assessing this facility in making it safe for kids and our goal is get back in school as quickly as possible," Barlow said.
The superintendent said he hopes to have the kids back in school by Monday.
Jackson County High was scheduled to host the Girls Basketball Regional Play-offs on Friday night. The game is still on, but instead will be held at the Middle School's gym at 7 p.m.
