La Vergne Woman Victim Of Identity Fraud
LA VERGNE, Tenn. – A woman in Rutherford County said she has been the victim of identity fraud after thieves filed their taxes using her Social Security number.
Jana Wilkes of La Vergne said she discovered the theft when she attempted to file her taxes this year. She said she doesn't know who stole her identity.
"Therefore, somebody else has my info filed a return and now is having a good time off of my name, I said that is not fair, that is not fair," she said.
Due to the rise in identity theft cases, the IRS has doubled the number of employees dedicated to these investigations but it still takes about 180 days to resolve each case. Financial advisors said as the number of these crimes increase, it is even more important to protect yourself.
Officials have recommended these tips to help protect your identity:
- File your taxes early.
- Guard your social security number.
- Watch out for scam emails from the IRS -- the IRS will only reach out to you via mail.
- Keep an eye on your mail to make sure documents haven't been stolen.
- If you do file online, make sure you are using a secure computer.
