New University Of Memphis President Approved

CREATED May 1, 2014

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - University of Memphis Provost M. David Rudd will become the school's next president on May 16.

The Commercial Appeal said the Tennessee Board of Regents approved Rudd on Thursday. He has been provost since March 2013.

Regents Chancellor John Morgan recommended Rudd over three other finalists.

The 53-year-old Rudd will replace R. Brad Martin, who has been interim president since July 1. Former President Shirley Raines retired June 30 after 12 years.

Rudd said he wants to continue Martin's pledge to hold tuition flat for in-state students next fall and charge out-of-state students less. He said he also wants to expand the university's research mission.
