School Superintendents Criticize Education Department

School Superintendents Criticize Education Department

CREATED Sep 12, 2013

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - More than 60 school superintendents have signed a petition calling on the governor and state lawmakers to re-evaluate the leadership at the Tennessee Department of Education.

The superintendents said Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman's office "has no interest in a dialogue" with the heads of school districts around the state.

The petition said superintendents' efforts to improve their schools are being thwarted by low teacher morale because of policy changes on the state level.

The letter states that superintendents are "not content with the current leadership" in the Education Department, but stops short of calling for Huffman's removal.

A spokeswoman for Huffman said the commissioner has not reviewed the letter and that he is focused on student achievement and improving education in the state
