Data Shows Virtual Academy Falls Short A 2nd Year
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Recent data from the state shows students at a heavily-criticized for-profit online school learned less than their peers anywhere else in Tennessee last year.
The Tennessean reported results from standardized tests show students in the Tennessee Virtual Academy made less progress as a group in reading, math, science and social studies than students enrolled in all 1,300 other elementary and middle schools who took the same tests.
The academy, which began operations in the 2011-2012 school year, fell far short of state expectations for the second consecutive year. Tennessee Education Commissioner Kevin Huffman called the school's first-year test results "unacceptable."
The recent data shows the school also failed to meet expectations for the 2012-2013 school year.
