Man Found Hours After Being Swept Away In Madison Flooding

CREATED Aug 31, 2014

MADISON, Tenn. – Crews were able to find a man several hours after he was swept away by flash-flood waters in Madison. The man was swept away after heavy rains moved through the area Saturday evening.

Officials responded to an area on Elm Street near Gallatin Road after witness reports that a person may have been swept away into the drainage ditch around 7:30 p.m.

Four different swift water teams from the Nashville Fire Department were dispatched to the scene. After failing to find anyone, officials decided to remain on the scene as a precaution.

“We don’t know if somebody is actually in the water or not, but we will continue to search for quite some time – just to be sure. (This is) what these teams are for,” said Commander Charles Shannon.

Hours later a man was found on the shoreline near Gibson Greek. He was taken to the hospital to get checked out. There was no word on his condition. His identity was not available.

Officials said the area has a history of flooding due to poor drainage systems. Elm Street also flooded during a previous storm in July.

Some residents on Elm Street were advised to evacuate the area, but have since returned to their homes.
