Community Rallies Around Clarksville Church After Cross Burning

By Todd Walker. CREATED Jul 31, 2014

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A message of love to drown out the message of hate. That was the goal of a "unity rally" Thursday night in Clarksville.

It was just over a week ago, on July 22, that a burned cross showed up on the front lawn of the New Hope Baptist Church.

It's a predominately African American church and police are investigating it as a hate crime. Hundreds showed up Thursday to say whoever burned that cross is forgiven but it won't be tolerated.

Pastor Vernon Hooks said he's received support from across the country.

"We got communications all the way from Oregon, Chicago, you just name. It all over," he said. "With the support of the community it's certainly is more uplifting for us."

Clarksville Police are still investigating.

If you have any tips an award is being offered for information that leads to an arrest call Crime Stoppers at 931-645-TIPS.
