Residents Displaced By Fire At Madison Apartment Complex

CREATED Jul 19, 2014
MADISON, Tenn. – Several residents have been displaced after a fire broke out inside an apartment complex in Madison.

The incident was reported just before 3 p.m. Saturday at the Alta Loma Apartments located in the 1500 block of Crestview Drive, not far from RiverGate Mall in Madison.

At least two firehouses responded to the two-alarm fire. Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of one of the buildings.

At least eight units were heavily damaged by the blaze, displacing nearly 35 people.

Four units on the top floor received extensive damage, while four bottom units also suffered significant water damage. Crews were working to determine whether or not a neighboring building had smoke damage to its exterior.

The fire spread quickly throughout the building, leaving some barely enough time to get to safety. Others, who weren't home at the time of the incident, returned to find all of their belongings gone.

"It's actually hard to say. I've never been in this situation before so it's really hard to say. But it's just that we lost everything," said Lasonya Flood.

Witnesses on the scene reported hearing loud explosions while firefighters were trying to extinguish the flames. The Fire Marshal has been called out to the scene to investigate.

Officials said two people were taken to the hospital with steam related burns.

The American Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter to assist those displaced by the fire. The Red Cross said residents can come to the Madison Church of Christ, located at 106 North Gallatin Road in Madison at 11:30 p.m.
