Official: Manual Being Written For Spillway

TIPTONVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - A Tennessee wildlife official says an operating manual is being drawn up for a new spillway on Reelfoot Lake before operation of the project is turned over to the federal government.

Tennessee Wildlife Refuge Agency spokesman David McKinney told WPSD-TV in Paducah, Kentucky that even though it appears nothing is happening at the new spillway site, studies of the area are being conducted.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation started construction on the new spillway in 2010 and finished in 2012. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Department will ultimately run the new spillway.

McKinney says when the new spillway comes online, the impact to the popular fishing and outdoors area should be minimal.

Reelfoot Lake was created when the region subsided during the New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812.
