74-Year-Old Boater Dies Following Rescue From Percy Priest Lake

CREATED Jul 17, 2014
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 74-year-old boater has died after being rescued from Percy Priest Lake on Wednesday morning.

The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said Gerald Patterson died after falling into the lake. His official cause of death has not yet been determined.

Crews were called to the Seven Points Recreation Center on Stewarts Ferry Pike for a water rescue just before 10 a.m.

Officials said Patterson was sitting on a seat in his boat when his seat belt somehow broke, causing him to fall out of his boat and into the water near Bear Island. Witnesses were able to pull him out of the lake and began administering CPR.

He was taken to Summit Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased. It was unclear if Patterson drowned, or if he had a heart attack in the water.

The TWRA said he was not wearing a life jacket.

Doug Markham with the TWRA described Patterson as a skilled fisherman. He strongly emphasized the importance of wearing a life jacket.
