CREATED Jul 16, 2014
JACKSON, Tenn. - A west Tennessee man has been charged with murder in the death of his father. He was taken into custody in Nashville on Sunday.

Officials with the Jackson Police Department said they charged 29-year-old Clayton Nelson in the death of 57-year-old Jeffrey Nelson of Jackson.

Clayton Nelson was charged with first-degree murder in perpetration of theft. He was also expected to be arraigned Wednesday on a separate felony theft charge.

Officers were called to Jeffrey Nelson's home Saturday morning after a family member expressed concerns.

When they arrived on the scene, they found a side door opened. They went inside and found the man dead. His vehicle was also missing.

The cause of death was not released.

Clayton Nelson was initially listed as a person of interest in the case.

Investigators were able to reach him by phone and convince him to turn surrender police. By that time, the suspect was in the Nashville area with his father’s truck. Jackson police made arrangements for him to surrender to a detective with the Metro Nashville Police Department around 10 a.m. Sunday.

Clayton Nelson was being held at the Madison County Jail. Online jail records did not indicate whether he was represented by a lawyer.

He was scheduled to be arraigned via video link Monday in Jackson City Court on a charge of first-degree murder in perpetration of theft.
