The infant died at the Waterfall Park daycare on Niagara Drive Tuesday afternoon. The daycare was run out of a home in the area.
The child was identified as Jesse Shayne from Nashville.
Don Aaron, spokesperson for the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, said the child went down for a nap at 9 a.m. Around 10 a.m. he showed signs of difficulty breathing. The daycare staff tried to revive him and called 911 emergency dispatch.
The child was rushed to Monroe Carell Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt where he died.
Police said while the situation was very tragic, there was no indication of foul play.
"The persons who were here at the time are very distraught. There were some teenagers here. There was the staff here. They immediately tried to care for this child - resuscitate the child. They are very distraught over what has taken place," said Aaron.
A neighbor said the people who run the daycare are caring people and were very upset over what happened.
An autopsy has been scheduled Wednesday to determine the exact cause of death.
