Tennessee National Guard Unit Conducting Training In Bulgaria
PARIS, Tenn. (AP) - Members of a Tennessee National Guard unit are in Bulgaria for several weeks of training for humanitarian and engineering missions.
Guard spokesman Randy Harris told the Paris Post-Intelligencer that 40 members of the 212th Engineer Co. went overseas on Monday.
The exercise is part of the State Partnership Program, or SPP, which dates back to the breakup of the Warsaw Pact in the early 1990s.
Harris says the program establishes bilateral relationship between foreign countries and U.S. states through the state's National Guard.
Tennessee first worked with Bulgaria in 1993.
The new focus of the SPP is to ready partner nations for deployment to the International Security Assistance Force
