18-Year-Old Shot, Killed Outside South Nashville Gas Station

CREATED Jul 16, 2014
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – An 18-year-old Murfreesboro man was shot and killed in a south Nashville gas station parking lot late Monday night.

Metropolitan Nashville Police said Deshaun Sawyers died after being shot in the back outside the Exxon Tiger Market on Harding Place, just off Interstate 24.

Sawyers and four friends were driving from Murfreesboro to a party in Brentwood when Sawyers told the driver that he needed to meet someone at the Exxon. Police said Sawyers got out of the car, walked to the side of the building, and got into an SUV, possibly a silver GMC Envoy.

Witnesses told police they heard gunshots and Sawyers ran from the SUV before collapsing in front of the gas station.

He was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where he was pronounced deceased.

Sawyers’ family said he had recently graduated from Blackman High School in Murfreesboro. His cousin said she will not have peace until his killer is found.

“I don't want the killer -- he don't need to make it past this morning out on these streets. I've already cried, but I would be so much better knowing that whoever did it is already in jail,” said the victim’s cousin Kayla Crosby.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

Police released surveillance photos of the GMC Envoy. Anyone with information was asked to call Crime Stoppers at (615)74-CRIME.
