Gang Member Convicted In August 2011 Shooting
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Authorities said a street gang member has been convicted of second-degree murder and several other felonies in an August 2011 shooting.
The Shelby County district attorney's office said 25-year-old Carlos Gonzalez was found guilty Thursday of killing 17-year-old Miguel Villa during a late-night altercation in a restaurant parking lot.
The victim's brother testified that a group of men attacked them and their friends with a baseball bat and a pipe. Gonzalez opened fire, striking Villa and causing the crowd to scatter.
Investigators said they recovered 11 shell casings from the scene.
A jury convicted Gonzalez of second-degree murder, three counts of attempted second-degree murder, one count of reckless endangerment, three counts of aggravated assault, one count of assault and three counts of employing a firearm while committing a dangerous felony.
