1 Worker Hurt In Chemical Leak At Georgia Plant

ATLANTA (AP) - Investigators are trying to determine what caused a leak at a Georgia chemical plant that injured a worker.

Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield said the accident happened Monday morning at a plant owned by MFG Chemical Inc.

A worker was adding a chemical to tank, which triggered a reaction that produced vapor. Satterfield said the vapor escaped before the worker could shut a lid. That worker apparently inhaled the vapor and was flown by helicopter to a burn center in Augusta.

Company officials said the release was contained to the plant. Satterfield said fire crews reported that some vapor escaped the site.

Fire officials briefly advised residents of a nearby apartment complex to stay inside. That precaution was later lifted.

Dalton is about 90 miles northwest of Atlanta, and about 30 miles southwest of Chattanooga, Tennessee.
