Tennessee Transportation Department Celebrating 100 Years

CREATED Jul 3, 2014

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - The Tennessee Department of Transportation is kicking off a yearlong celebration running up to the 100th anniversary of the agency.

The centennial anniversary of the state law that first created what was first called the Tennessee Department of Highways and Public Works will fall on July 1, 2015.

The agency plans to unveil a permanent centennial memorial to highlight TDOT's accomplishments. TDOT has also launched a website with videos, a schedule of activities and a timeline of key events in the agency's history.

Commissioner John Schroer lauded the decision by then-Governor Austin Peay in 1923 to have motorists fund the state's roads through taxes on gasoline and auto registrations and the leadership of then-Governo Lamar Alexander for his 1986 road program that included Tennessee's most recent gas tax increase.
