NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A man was arrested for allegedly assaulting a police officer without provocation.
Metropolitan Nashville Police said the officer was walking by 32-year-old Alvin Covington on the way to help another officer.
A Davidson County affidavit said Covington began punching the officer in the face while he was standing in an alley way.
The officer defended himself, but Covington allegedly bit the officer’s finger and drew blood.
The officer was able to get control, and tried to put him into handcuffs. Covington allegedly continued to struggle with the officer before another officer was able to help get him under control.
The officer was not seriously hurt.
Once he was in custody, police found cocaine in Covington’s pocket.
Covington was charged with assault of an officer, resisting arrest, and drug possession. According to records, Covington has two or more prior convictions for possession of drugs.
His bond was set at $25,000.
