Victim, Suspect In Deadly Machete Attack Were Engaged Couple

CREATED Jun 24, 2014
WEST POINT, Tenn. – Officials have released the name of the woman killed in a machete attack in Lawrence County. They said 43-year-old Michelle Dominique Robinson was brutally attacked by her fiance and later died from her injuries.

The man arrested and charged with Robinson's death was 28-year-old Christopher Simpson. He was booked one count of first degree murder. The two were apparently living together and engaged to be married.

The incident happened Saturday afternoon off Wisdom Road in the West Point Community. Emergency communications director and EMA director Johnny Cheatwood said the woman lost several fingers and had a deep cut on her neck.

She was transported by a Air Evac medical helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, where she later died.

Evidence collected at the scene linked Simpson to the murder.

Lawrence County Sheriff Jimmy Brown said Robinson had only been living in Tennessee for a few months, and the lack of family in the area delayed the identification. Robinson was originally from North Carolina, although investigators were still working to determine exactly where.

Officials were still not sure about the motive for the attack. Sheriff Brown said he knew of Simpson, but had no idea what would have led to the attack on Saturday.

"I've known him for approximately four to five years. He's had a little history, but he's also a military man, so there was nothing that really jumped out," said Brown.

Simpson was in General Sessions court Monday. The judge determined Simpson would remain incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center without bond.
