Judge Moreland Strikes Back At Metro Police Chief

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Davidson County General Sessions Judge Casey Moreland has struck back after Metropolitan Nashville Police Chief Steve Anderson took him to task in a scathing memo earlier this week.

"I think he's a bully. Just what he did to me, he's tried to bully me," said Moreland.

In that memo, Anderson blasted Moreland and others for letting David Chase - a domestic violence suspect - out of jail before his 12-hour cooling off period was over. Chase was arrested not long after his release and accused of again assaulting the victim.

"I apologize. If I made a mistake based on bad information, I apologized. I took responsibility for it," said Moreland.

The judge said he objected to Anderson questioning whether he was committed to cracking down on domestic violence. In the memo, Anderson also talked about a conversation he had with Moreland where he implied the release was "just good ole boys doing what good ole boys do."

"I never said that," said Moreland.

He said Anderson was just holding a grudge against him from nine years ago that has nothing to do with domestic violence.

"That memo was nothing more than a very unprofessional, rambling rant that was a slanderous attack on me," said Moreland.

The judge has been considering legal action against the police chief.

Other critics have questioned Moreland's relationship with Chase's initial attorney Brian Lewis. NewsChannel 5 obtained a photograph of the two on vacation in Costa Rica. Some believe Moreland did a favor for Lewis by releasing his client early.

Lewis said that's not true, but admitted they went on the vacation.

"We've been friends back from before he was even a judge. There were other people on that trip as well," said Lewis.

Chief Anderson declined to respond for this story. A spokesperson said the memo he sent stands for itself.
