Hilleary Endorses Tracy's Bid Against DesJarlais
DAYTON, Tenn. (AP) - State Senator Jim Tracy has named former U.S. Representative Van Hilleary as honorary campaign chairman for his congressional bid against fellow Republican Representative Scott DesJarlais.
Hilleary, who represented Tennessee's 4th Congressional District from 1995 to 2003, announced his endorsement of Tracy in Dayton on Thursday morning.
DesJarlais, a Jasper physician before his election to Congress, won a second term in 2012 despite disclosures that he had affairs with patients and once urged one of them to seek an abortion.
Hilleary was the Republican gubernatorial nominee in Tennessee in 2002, but narrowly lost to Democrat Phil Bredesen. He also ran for the U.S. Senate in 2006, but the Republican primary was won by Bob Corker, who went on to win the general election.
Tracy is a Shelbyville insurance agent and a former college basketball referee.
