NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A 58-year-old woman was killed and her young granddaughter was injured in a single-vehicle crash northwest of Nashville.

Officials with the Metro Nashville Police Department said Bertha Furkins was killed in the crash around 6 p.m. Sunday in the 4800 block of Ashland City Highway.

Furkins was traveling west on the roadway in a 2000 Chevrolet pickup when it crossed into the eastbound lanes, traveled off the roadway and down an embankment. Furkins died at the scene.

Her 5-year-old granddaughter was a passenger in the truck. She was taken to Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt with non-life threatening injuries.

The reason Furkins lost control of the truck remained under investigation.
