CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – A father from Fort Campbell has been charged with neglect after allegedly leaving his 18-month-old daughter unattended in his car.

Officials with the Clarksville Police Department said 23-year-old Dearius Oliver was arrested around 3:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Grove apartments on Nolen Road in Clarksville.

According to police, someone saw the toddler sitting unattended in an unlocked car with the windows and sunroof open a few inches. The person later contacted authorities and said the child’s guardian was not in the area.

When they arrived on the scene, police said Oliver approached them and said the child in the back seat was his daughter. He reportedly told officers he was trying to find a place to sleep for the night with a friend and had only been inside 10 minutes.

Police were later told Oliver had been inside the apartment for at least 30 minutes to one hour.

Oliver was charged with Child Abuse and Neglect and booked into the Montgomery County Jail.
