Man Killed, Wife Injured In Maury County Rollover Crash

CREATED May 26, 2014
MAURY COUNTY, Tenn. – A Franklin man was killed and his wife was injured in a rollover crash in Maury County on Saturday night.

The crash was reported around 8 p.m. on McClanahan Road in the Hampshire community.

Officials with the Tennessee Highway Patrol said 69-year-old Gray D. Sands, Jr. and his 67-year-old wife, Candace, were riding in a Mazda Miata, when he lost control going around a curve.

The car traveled off the road and rolled several times down a steep embankment, where it came to rest upside down against a tree.

Sands, Jr., was pronounced deceased on the scene.

Haville Himes lives on the road and said that wrecks in the area are not uncommon.

“Just about have to sit down here and watch it and it'll make you wondering if you even need to get out of the driveway,” he said.

He said that part of McClanahan Road in Hampshire is known for three things: twists, turns and speed. Troopers said speed was a factor in the crash that killed Sands, Jr.

Himes said he saw the car speed past moments before the crash.

Without any guard rail in place, he said he always worries about the next wreck that he said is sure to come.

Candace Sands was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where her condition was not known.
