Body Recovered From Percy Priest Lake Near Smith Springs Recreation

CREATED May 16, 2014
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – A body was recovered from the Smith Springs Recreation area at Percy Priest Lake on Thursday evening.

Officials with the Metro Office of Emergency Management said the body was recovered by divers.

Although officials have not identified the victim, the body was recovered in the area where 16-year-old Kortae Hughes was last seen around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hughes dove into the water while swimming with friends, and never resurfaced.

Crews on the scene reportedly offered their condolences to Hughes' family as well.

Heavy rain and lightning prevented divers from resuming the search for his body Wednesday, but the search resumed Thursday with divers, sonar, and cadaver dogs.

Two vigils were scheduled for Hughes on Friday night. One was set for 6 p.m. at Hillwood High School, where Hughes was a student. Another was set for 7 p.m. at Morgan Park.
