SMYRNA, Tenn. – A teacher for the Rutherford County School District has been arrested on charges of sexual battery.

Officials with the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office said 39-year-old Larry Mathews, a teacher at Siegel High School, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of sexual battery by an authority figure.

Investigators said Mathews has been accused of allegedly touching a student inappropriately at the school on Thursday.

Rutherford County Schools’ spokesman James Evans said Mathews was a criminal justice teacher at the school.

“We are shocked and concerned about the charge,” Evans said. “We are cooperating fully with the Sheriff’s Office during the investigation.”

Mathews was hired as a non-tenured teacher in 2012. He reportedly passed all necessary background checks.

He has been held in lieu of $3,500 bond. A hearing has been set for July 8 in General Sessions Court.

Mathews has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the criminal investigation.
